This piece depicts the scene in Romeo and Juliet as they wake from slumber.  Romeo, alarmed, exclaims that he hears the lark, it's morning and he must be off.  Juliet, sleepily declares, no, it's the nightingale in the pomegrante tree so it must still be nighttime. Shakespeare's words are written on the canvas and peek through the layers of leaves and pomegrantes.
